Building Blocks provides consultancy services to families running
an ABA programme for a child with autism.
Children learn new skills in their own homes and also typically
attend a nursery or pre-school for a couple of sessions a week.
We follow a developmental curriculum but each programme is individualised
according to the child's specific strengths and needs. We focus
on:
|
Communication and Behaviour |
|
Ensuring that every child has a functional communication system
in place. In addition to spoken language we also have children who
use Makaton (signs), written words or PECS (picture symbols) to
communicate.
We work on reducing behaviours such as self stimulation, tantrums
and other challenging behaviours; replacing them with more appropriate
behaviour.
|
| |
Language and Social Skills |
|
We work on expanding a child's understanding and use of language;
with the goal of bringing it up to an age appropriate level.
We have extensive experience of developing children's social
skills, starting with elementary skills such as developing awareness
and interactions with others, through to making friends and maintaining
friendships.

Play and Independent Living Skills |
|
Play is a developmental theme that runs throughout the programme,
starting with learning to play with toys appropriately through to
imaginative play with peers.
Independent living skills are taught as age appropriate and include
functional skills such as toilet training, dressing and independence
at meal times.
|
We are experienced at working closely with other professionals involved
in a child's education, and take a flexible approach in terms of
incorporating recommendations.
The child's consultant is responsible for designing and developing
the child's ABA programme. The consultant provides initial and on-going
training for the family and team of ABA tutors.
In addition to seeing their own consultant on a regular basis, Building Blocks also offers the benefit of periodic reviews with another experienced consultant. These can be particularly valuable in terms of getting
an additional perspective on the child's progress and future goals.
The ABA tutors are recruited and employed by the family and they provide
the one to one tuition hours. Building Blocks offers both fortnightly
and monthly supervision. We are also able to offer workshop services to
those families who are overseas or outside of the London area.
